Dragon fruit loves all this rain

We have had flooding and rain, and more flooded roads and mudslides.  It was a busy week last week  just trying to get around!  some of the plants though are in their element with all this rain.  The dragonfruit has burst into flower again.  I think this is the third flush of fruit this season!  It is supposed to be part of the cactus family which I thought didn't like too much water.  Shows what I know!

Here you can see the native bees which gather around pollinating the flowers.  There are also green ants, so not sure if it needs both, but they definitely do their job well! The flowers open during the night and then by the afternoon are just a hanging bunch of petals.  Short but sweet life!  Off to the left you can see the flowers that flowered the night before.

This is the most beautiful flower, followed by very tasty fruit!

I know I do go on about the dragonfruit , but this yummy goodness on my yoghurt is what is to come!

  1. We were really disappointed with the ONE dragonfruit we grew last year as it was tasteless. I have heard people say they were delicious so we wondered why ours wasn't.

    1. The flavour is not as intense and super sweet as a lot of tropical fruit. Maybe that is why I like it!

  3. Hope the rain and mud hasn't been too damaging in your part of the country.
The dragonfruit flower is beautiful. I don't think I've ever eaten dragon fruit, but I have a friend who has some in his garden, so will have to ask if he can give me one.

    1. Oh yes Sami, you have to try it. We just had another huge downpour last night with thunder and lightening, and flooded roads. I am so over this wet season!

  4. I was given five cuttings of dragon fruit from a fellow gardener. I am pleased that they have taken off successfully, so I have positioned them out in the veggie patch. They are in big pots, and not sure if I will move them or not yet. Do you have to hand pollinate the flower or does nature take care of it for you? I think I will need to hand pollinate them here.

From what I have read they are a tropical plants so should do well where you are. I have heard they taste bland, and if that is the case, I will add to smoothies, juices etc. Haha getting ahead of myself just a bit!

    1. Mine is in a pot, but I suspect the roots might have grown right through the bottom! I dont hand pollinate - it seems that the pollinators here are the green ants and native bees. I am not sure if you have them there? I dont think they are bland at all, but not super sweet like a lot of other tropical fruits. I love them with plain yoghurt. They would make your smoothies a beautiful pink colour. I sometimes add them to my kombucha, and it looks so pretty. I look forward to seeing how yours go.
