Resident Kookaburra

A couple of kookaburras seem to have a nest in the tree behind our property.  I was out at the potting bench the other day and you know how you get the feeling that someone is watching you?  Well I looked up and saw him just standing on the fence about ten feet away from me.   Isn't he gorgeous?

We are getting a bit of rain, and more rain forecast all weekend.  I think my plants will love that good soaking.

  2. They are very inquisitive creatures. I often find one or two perched along the verandah railing or sitting nearby in a tree when I'm out doing some gardening. Great photo. Do you hear the kookaburra call first thing in the morning?

    1. Bernie,
I think if I am busy they don't mind me working quite close, it is only when I get the camera out that they get a bit shy. Oh I only hear that on the weekends - during the week I leave for work in the dark so think they are still sleeping!

  3. Strangely enough as I read your post our resident Kookaburra is sitting on our patio fence just outside this window. I love these birds, that is a great photo....

  4. I love them too. They may have been hoping you had some nice juicy worms in your potting mix.

I saw one swoop down and pick something up out of the veggie patch - that is what it must have been!

  7. They are so beautiful. We don´t get them in my suburb, far too many houses, but a bit further up in the Perth Hills, they are quite common.

We are alongside a creek and in the evening you can see them all call each other back to the big trees there.

  10. What a cutie. I love kookaburras - they always surprise me by how huge they are.

Enjoy your rain. In Sydney we're 2 hours away from making a record - the driest start to May EVER. We haven't had a drop of rain this month. The last drizzle we had was on the 25th of April. Thank goodness for rainwater tanks!
